थार्नडाइक — प्रयास तथा त्रुटि का सिद्धांत प्रयास तथा त्रुटि सिद्धांत के प्रतिपादक थार्नडाइक हैं। सीखने में यह सिद्धांत भी अपना विशेष महत्व रखता है। थार्नडाइक का विश्वास है कि चूहे तथा बिल्ली की तरह बालक भी प्रयास और त्रुटि के द्वारा ही सीखते हैं। बालक इस सिद्धांत के अनुसार चलना, बोलना तथा भोजन करना सीखते हैं। सिद्धांत का सार —  इस प्रकार के सीखने को हम सफल प्रतिक्रियाओं के चुनाव के द्वारा सीखने की विधि भी कहते हैं। इस सिद्धांत का स्पष्टीकरण इस प्रकार से किया जा सकता है —  जब कोई व्यक्ति कोई कार्य करना सीखता है तो उसमें शुरुवात में त्रुटियां होती हैं परंतु बार-बार प्रयत्न करने पर व्यक्ति उसे करना सीख जाता है और यही 'प्रयास और त्रुटि' से सीखना कहलाता है। वुडवर्थ के अनुसार — प्रयास और त्रुटि के अंतर्गत किसी नवीन कार्य को सीखने के लिए अनेक प्रयत्न करने पड़ते हैं जिनमें से अधिकांश गलत होते हैं। थार्नडाइक का प्रयोग — प्रयास एवं त्रुटि सिद्धांत के प्रतिपादक थार्नडाइक हैं। इन्होंने प्रयोग किया बिल्ली पर। एक बिल्ली पकड़ी और उसे भूखा रखा इस भूखी बिल्ली को पिजड़े में बंद कर दिय...
